GTA 6 CERO Z Rating in Japan Sparks Censorship Fears

Japan's CERO issued GTA 6 its harshest Z (18+) rating — but the missing adult-content labels suggest Rockstar may have submitted a censored version.

What this means

  • Japanese players may be looking at a censored version of GTA 6 if the missing adult-content labels mean Rockstar submitted an edited build — GTA 5's Japan launch had entire scenes removed.
  • A Z rating is effectively a commercial death sentence for mass retail in Japan: the country's strictest classification limits where and how the game can be sold and advertised.
  • If Japan gets a modified version, it sets a precedent watchers should track for other strict markets like Australia, which has censored earlier GTA entries.
  • With launch only weeks away (November 19), Rockstar will likely need to address regional differences soon — players importing the Japanese version should know what they're getting.

Key facts

  • Date: October 18, 2026
  • Rating: CERO Z (18+, Japan's harshest classification)
  • Spotted by: GameSpark on Xbox and PlayStation Store listings
  • Descriptors: Violence and Crime — nudity, sex, and drug labels absent
  • Source: Notebookcheck, citing GameSpark's store-listing discovery

GTA 6 has now been rated in most markets, and the latest verdict is one of the harshest yet. Japan's CERO (Computer Entertainment Rating Organization) has issued the game a Z classification, its strictest rating, which instructs buyers that the title is suitable only for players aged 18 and older.

The rating was spotted by Japanese outlet GameSpark on the Xbox and PlayStation Store listings for the game. The launch trailer, released October 15, didn't display the classification, so the rating appears to be a very recent development.

Here's where it gets interesting. CERO Z's content descriptors warn about "Violence" and "Crime" — expected for GTA — but the labels for nudity, sex, and drugs are conspicuously absent. That's strange, because Rockstar's own website states that adult content is present in the game, the trailers show intimate scenes between Jason and Lucia, and a leaked European PEGI 18 description previously hinted that characters can use cocaine on demand.

The missing labels may indicate that Rockstar submitted a censored version of GTA 6 for the Japanese market. History supports the concern: GTA 5 also received a CERO Z rating, launched in Japan later than in North America, and players eventually discovered missing content — a sexual encounter involving Trevor was deleted, and nudity involving strippers and prostitutes was toned down, though most of the violence survived.

So far, Rockstar has not confirmed any plans to edit the game for any region. Japan isn't the only strict market, either — Australia's classification board gave GTA 6 a Restricted R 18+ verdict for drugs and adult content, while North America's ESRB rated it Mature 17+, both roughly in line with how GTA 5 was treated.
