GTA 6 Devs Had Freedom to Add Cool Features — Like RDR2's Horse Balls

Jason Schreier says Rockstar gave the GTA 6 team so much creative freedom that not even top executives know everything in the game — the same freedom that produced Red Dead Redemption 2's infamous horse physics.

What this means

  • Expect years of discovery: the world is stuffed with details even Rockstar's leads don't know.
  • The weapon wheel survives — Rockstar's experiments with replacements didn't beat the classic.
  • This is the culture that made RDR2's world feel alive; GTA 6 gets the same treatment at a bigger scale.

Key facts

  • Date: October 19, 2026
  • Source: Jason Schreier (Bloomberg) via Post Game video interview; reported by IGN, corroborated by Polygon
  • Key quote: Aaron Garbut — "There's no one person that has this whole thing in their head"
  • What changed: weapon-wheel replacement experiments were scrapped; the classic wheel stays

Rockstar gave the GTA 6 development team wide creative freedom to add details simply because they thought they were cool — so much freedom that not even the studio's top executives know everything in the game. The details come from Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier's 18-minute video interview for Post Game, recorded after his visit to Rockstar North in Edinburgh, and were reported by IGN on October 19.

Schreier said he would guess that "not even top developers" at Rockstar know every small detail added to Vice City and its wealth of NPCs. Rockstar's Aaron Garbut put it bluntly: "There's no one person that has this whole thing in their head." With the game's scale and decade-long development, Schreier said players will likely still be discovering new details years after release.

The famous example is Red Dead Redemption 2's horse testicle physics — which visibly shrink in cold weather. According to Schreier, the feature is real, but it was never a planned bullet point on Rockstar's production schedule. Someone on the team simply had the time and built it. Schreier said to expect the same kind of incidental detail in GTA 6.

The video also revealed that the team spent months — if not years — trying to replace the traditional weapon wheel, worried a game-like menu would break immersion for Jason and Lucia. Designers tried trays, webs, and interface revisions before abandoning the experiments and returning to the classic weapon wheel.
