What this means
- An M rating (not Adults Only) keeps GTA 6 on every store shelf — Sony and Microsoft don’t stock AO games, so this was the expected, commercially safe outcome.
- The “sex scenes” wording in Australia and New Zealand is the first time the series has used that exact descriptor — a sign the game leans into mature storytelling rather than pulling back.
- The purchases notice almost certainly covers the Ultimate Edition upgrade and the bundled GTA+ month, not a cash shop — but fans will want Rockstar’s explanation.
Key facts
- Rated: M for Mature 17+ (ESRB), PEGI 18 (Europe), R18 (Australia/NZ — with “sex scenes” named)
- When: ratings appeared on Rockstar’s official pages and store listings in early October 2026
- Descriptors: blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, use of drugs and alcohol — plus “In-Game Purchases”
- Not present: the “Includes Random Items” loot-box label
Rockstar Games has put the official age rating for Grand Theft Auto VI on its own pages: the game is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB in the US and PEGI 18 in Europe, with store listings across regions updated in the first days of October 2026.
The ESRB lists seven content descriptors: blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol — the same seven GTA V carried, so on paper the series is not breaking new ground. In Australia and New Zealand, though, the PlayStation Store goes further and names “sex scenes” outright, a first for the series. Trailers have already shown intimate scenes between Jason and Lucia.
The rating also carries an “In-Game Purchases” notice, which drew attention because Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said on September 17 that GTA 6 launches with “no recurrent consumer spending.” The label does not contradict him by itself: the ESRB applies it to any real-money offer inside a game, including upgrades and memberships — and every GTA 6 pre-order already bundles a month of GTA+, which then renews until cancelled. It is a standard disclosure, not confirmation of a microtransaction store.
Notably absent is the “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)” label for loot boxes — GTA 6 does not carry it. The ESRB’s longer rating summary, which usually describes specific scenes, has not been posted yet.
