What this means

  • The marketing fight is about real politics, not the game — county officials object to advertising a game covering "violence, corruption and unethical behavior."
  • The Oct 15 Miami Beach takeover — a separate push — also looks delayed, but murals, skyscrapers and the blimp show Rockstar's campaign is huge regardless.
  • This is political negotiation theater as much as opposition; The Miamian reports some critics want a bigger cut of the $150M pie.
  • For players, nothing changes about the game — but launch-week Miami will be a fascinating real-world spectacle.

Key facts

  • Reported: October 13, 2026 (The Miamian via RockstarINTEL)
  • What: County commissioners push back on GTA VI ads at Miami International Airport, PortMiami, Metromover
  • Key figures: Commissioner Rene Garcia ("should not be collaborating"), Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz; Rockstar spending "a minimum of $150 million" on marketing
  • Timeline: Miami Beach Oct 15 start unsigned and likely delayed

Rockstar Games' plan to turn Miami into a real-life Vice City is running into political trouble. According to The Miamian, reported by RockstarINTEL on October 13, the studio's bid to advertise GTA VI at county-owned properties — including Miami International Airport, PortMiami and Metromover stations — is "in serious jeopardy."

The pushback comes from Miami-Dade County officials. Commissioner Rene Garcia calls the plan "uncomfortable" and says the county "should not be collaborating" with GTA VI. A vote that would have ceased all negotiations with Rockstar was almost held — it was delayed, but the threat is on the table.

Garcia put numbers to the dispute: Rockstar is spending "a minimum of $150 million" on GTA VI marketing, he said, while questioning Miami-Dade County's $957,000 contract with the company — "It does not make sense."

On the other side, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava's staff are working with Rockstar to "temporarily" promote GTA VI. The Miamian's reporting calls the outrage "manufactured," arguing some opponents are "more bothered about being frozen out of the discussions with Rockstar."

Meanwhile, the separate Miami Beach marketing campaign due to start October 15 is itself unsigned and "most likely" delayed, reporter Joel Franco explained, with details still being worked out. The Miami Herald reports Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz is also pushing back. Notably, Rockstar's marketing is already visible elsewhere — murals have been painted, skyscrapers covered and a blimp is flying.
