GTA 6 PS5 QSSR: Digital Foundry Finds No Sign of Sony's New Upscaler in Launch Trailer

Digital Foundry's Rich Leadbetter says there's no evidence of Sony's new QSSR upscaler in GTA 6's PS5 launch trailer — the render budget math doesn't add up.

What this means

  • If true, it suggests Rockstar is confident in GTA 6's native image quality at 1440p — it doesn't need Sony's AI upscaling to hit its visual target on base PS5.
  • The 'play best on PS5' marketing line appears to rest on optimization rather than a secret upscaling advantage — temper expectations about a visual gulf between platforms.
  • QSSR could still appear in the final game or in a later patch: the trailer footage may be older than the current build, and Leadbetter leaves the door open.
  • This is a technical analysis of trailer pixels, not the final game — the real verdict comes after November 19 when Digital Foundry can test actual PS5 hardware.

Key facts

  • Date: October 18, 2026
  • Claim: No QSSR upscaling visible in the PS5-captured launch trailer
  • Analysis: Digital Foundry's Rich Leadbetter, in a 20-minute video
  • Key figure: ~4ms of a 33ms render budget to upscale 1440p to 4K via QSSR
  • Source: Push Square, citing Digital Foundry's trailer analysis

Earlier this month, Sony quietly brought its new QSSR upscaler to base PS5 hardware — a version of the PS5 Pro's acclaimed PSSR upscaling that has so far only appeared in first-party titles Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei. The timing set tongues wagging: QSSR would be made available to third-party developers, and many speculated its introduction was deliberately timed to coincide with GTA 6, which Rockstar says will "play best on PS5".

But tech experts Digital Foundry don't believe there's any evidence of it in this week's GTA 6 launch trailer, which was captured on Sony's console according to a disclaimer in the video itself.

Speaking in a 20-minute analysis video, Digital Foundry's Rich Leadbetter was blunt: "I don't think we're seeing it here." His reasoning is arithmetic. If the game's internal rendering resolution is 1440p — which the analysis suggests — then what would QSSR actually do? Based on Quality Mode in Marvel's Wolverine, upscaling to 4K costs around 4 milliseconds out of a 33ms render budget — "well over 10% of your rendering budget just on QSSR. That's quite extravagant."

In short: if GTA 6 is already targeting a native resolution that scales cleanly to 4K screens, QSSR may simply not be the right fit, and the processing cost would eat meaningfully into the game's rendering budget with no clear benefit.

There are caveats. This launch trailer was likely captured using older footage, and it's entirely possible Rockstar's final build looks different when it launches on November 19. Leadbetter himself notes that image quality was one of the things Digital Foundry criticized in the earlier Extended Look — so he's curious what QSSR could bring to the table once the final product is in the wild.
