What this means

  • If you want a physical box for your collection, waiting until launch may mean missing out — collectors in the US are already seeing empty shelves at major retailers.
  • The sell-out confirms Rockstar's June warning that code-in-box stock is genuinely limited, not infinite like digital licenses — demand for GTA 6 is outstripping even box supply.
  • Digital pre-orders can't sell out, so anyone who just wants to play on day one can still buy through the PlayStation or Xbox stores.
  • Watch for restocks and other retailers: some Target stores still show stock for November 12, and Amazon may replenish before launch.

Key facts

  • Date: October 12, 2026 — sell-outs observed on Amazon US as of Sunday, October 11
  • What: GTA 6 code-in-box editions (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S) show "Currently unavailable" on Amazon US; "Preorders sold out" at many Target stores in LA, NYC and other populated areas
  • Context: Rockstar confirmed in June that the code-in-box edition is produced in limited quantities — its store page says "while supplies last"
  • Source: RockstarINTEL (verified directly), corroborated by GamingBible and ScreenRant; digital pre-orders unaffected

Grand Theft Auto VI has sold out at the world's biggest retailer — at least in one form. Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S code-in-box editions of the game can no longer be pre-ordered on Amazon US, with the listings reading "Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."

The shortages go beyond Amazon. RockstarINTEL has verified that pre-orders have also sold out at many Target stores in heavily populated US areas, with locations in Los Angeles and New York City displaying a "Preorders sold out" notice. Some stores still list stock with a "Ready on Nov 12" date, so availability varies by location.

The twist: GTA 6 has no physical disc. The "boxed" version is a plastic case containing a download code — exactly what some fans online have joked about. But the boxes themselves are finite, and Rockstar said back in June that only limited quantities of the code-in-box edition would be produced; its own store page states "while supplies last."

Importantly, the sell-outs only affect the boxed version. Digital pre-orders through the PlayStation Store and Xbox Microsoft Store are unaffected and cannot sell out. There is no word on whether Amazon will restock before the November 19 launch, and listing errors remain a possibility — though RockstarINTEL verified the sell-outs directly rather than relying on a single screenshot.
