What this means

  • Lucia isn't a blank-slate outlaw: a Liberty City upbringing ties GTA 6 directly to GTA's most famous city — expect cross-city callbacks and nods.
  • "Two lovers on the run" confirms the Bonnie-and-Clyde dynamic is the story spine, not just trailer marketing.
  • Raul as mentor means Vice City's underworld gets taught in-game — the classic GTA mentor arc usually drives the heist structure.
  • Culture-war satire (election signs, robocalls, political talk radio) signals GTA 6's comedy targets contemporary American life, not specific real events.

  • What's new: Lucia's Liberty City upbringing, Raul as mentor character, "two lovers on the run" story framing, Leonida's satirical media landscape

Rockstar's writers are pulling back the curtain on Grand Theft Auto 6's story. In an interview published in LOVE magazine's issue 27 (out October 5), Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, narrative senior vice president Rupert Humphries, and writers Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern and Alexa D'Agostino describe Jason and Lucia as "two lovers on the run" across Leonida — a classic GTA love story where Lucia is the engine of the partnership and Jason the brake.

The interview also reveals Lucia's backstory for the first time. Writer Alexa D'Agostino says Lucia grew up in Liberty City — the setting of GTA IV and GTA: Liberty City Stories. D'Agostino drew on her own mother, an immigrant who raised her "rowdy, kind, but not to take any shit," adding: "There are many badass women like her, just as there are many men like Jason. We just focused on capturing that."

There's also a new name: Raul, an older character who acts as mentor to the couple. Raul embodies Vice City, bringing the local and criminal knowledge Jason and Lucia lack when they arrive in the city — and a "knowing Miami-cool" vibe, introducing them to high-stakes heists and large-scale crime.

Humphries says Leonida is "filled with all the characters and culture wars necessary to make it feel alive": players will spot election signs, get campaign robocalls, and hear political talk shows on the radio. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
