What this means
- For almost every player this changes nothing: keep automatic updates on and you will already have 14.10 well before November 19.
- Jailbroken consoles on 13.60 or older face a hard choice — updating to 14.10 removes the jailbreak, skipping it means no GTA 6.
- This may not be an anti-piracy move at all: games built on a newer Sony SDK often carry a recent firmware floor by default.
- Updating now also avoids a firmware prompt on launch day, when PlayStation Network traffic is expected to spike.
Key facts
- Reported: October 2, 2026 (PlayStation Game Size datamine)
- Required firmware (reported): PS5 system software 14.10.00.00 or newer
- Firmware released: October 1, 2026 (version 26.06-14.10.00)
- Status: Unconfirmed — neither Rockstar Games nor Sony has commented
- Xbox: nothing similar reported for Xbox Series X|S so far
A PlayStation Store datamine suggests Grand Theft Auto VI will require PS5 system software 14.10.00.00 or newer to run at launch. The finding comes from PlayStation Game Size, an account that tracks the PlayStation Store backend, whose October 2 post read simply: “Grand Theft Auto VI requires at least PS5 Update 14.10.00.00.”
Sony began rolling out that exact version, 26.06-14.10.00, on October 1, 2026. Its official release notes are two lines long: “security fixes to the system software” and improved performance and stability.
Neither Rockstar Games nor Sony has commented on the requirement, so until one of them does this remains a datamine — not an official spec. Notebookcheck reported the finding on October 3, and no outlet has independently contradicted it.
The rumor hits one group hardest: jailbroken consoles. Public PS5 jailbreak support currently stops at firmware 13.60 — the Relapse exploit worked on 7.00 through 13.60 — and there is no public exploit for 14.10. If the datamine holds, anyone stuck on a jailbroken 13.60 box faces a choice: update and lose the jailbreak, or keep it and lose GTA 6.
For everyone else, this is likely a non-event. A PS5 that stays online with automatic updates enabled either has 14.10 already or will get it soon. To check manually: Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. And a caveat worth remembering: big games often ship with a recent firmware floor simply because they are built on a newer Sony developer kit — that alone can set the minimum, no anti-piracy plot required.

RUMOR: single datamine source (PlayStation Game Size, October 2, 2026); also reported by Notebookcheck on October 3. Neither Rockstar Games nor Sony has confirmed the requirement. Confirmation would come from Rockstar's official PS5 specs or Sony's PlayStation Store listing.
