What this means
- Japanese players get a GTA 6 launch-day console option in black — timed exactly to the biggest game of the year.
- The Japan-only, region-locked discount pricing is a Sony move to grow its Japanese userbase, not a GTA 6 bundle.
- No performance bump: this is a colorway launch, not a PS5 Pro-style upgrade — existing PS5s play GTA 6 identically.
- Western buyers can approximate it today with official Midnight Black console covers ($54 / £45).
Key facts
- Announced: October 13, 2026 (official PlayStation Blog)
- Launch: November 19, 2026 — same day as GTA 6
- Price: ¥55,000 (~$350) in Japan; ¥11,980 (~$76) for the matching disc drive
- Availability: Japan-only, region-locked; no Western release announced
Sony has announced a Midnight Black version of the PlayStation 5, and it lands on the exact day the world has been waiting for: November 19, 2026 — launch day for Grand Theft Auto VI.
The announcement came via the official PlayStation Blog. The new model is the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black (CFI-2200B02S), carrying an 825GB SSD, a bundled Midnight Black DualSense controller, and Astro's Playroom preinstalled.
There is a catch: for now, the console is confirmed only for Japan. It is the region-locked Japanese-language version, selling at the discounted price of ¥55,000 (about $350), and it only works with a PlayStation account set to Japan and the system language set to Japanese.
Sony will also release a Midnight Black edition of the disc drive on November 19 for players who want to attach one. A matching disc drive is sold separately at ¥11,980 (about $76). Pre-orders open October 20 at participating Japanese retailers and online stores.
Sony has not announced whether the Midnight Black PS5 will come West. Notably, the hardware is standard — no performance bump over the existing Digital Edition. Western players who want the look can already buy Midnight Black console covers ($54 / £45) and get essentially the same result.
