GTA 6's Lucia Will 'Stand Tall' Beside Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic, Rockstar Writer Says

Rockstar writer Alexa D'Agostino told LOVE magazine she wrote GTA 6 protagonist Lucia Caminos to stand alongside Rockstar's most beloved heroes — inspired by her own mother, an immigrant who grew up near Liberty City.

What this means

  • Rockstar is positioning Lucia — the first female lead in GTA history — alongside Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic, the studio's two most emotionally beloved protagonists. That sets the bar for GTA 6's story extremely high.
  • The "perfectly imperfect" writing approach signals Rockstar is chasing emotional realism over caricature — the same quality that made RDR2 a masterpiece.
  • Basing Lucia on a real person (the writer's own mother) plus an actress who "brought a lot to the character" suggests a grounded, performance-driven lead rather than a symbol.

Key facts

  • Key quote: Lucia was written to "stand tall next to the likes of Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic"
  • Also revealed: Lucia's actress "brought a lot to the character" (Rockstar won't confirm her identity); mentor character Raul "embodies Vice City"

Rockstar writer Alexa D'Agostino says GTA 6 protagonist Lucia Caminos was written to "stand tall next to the likes of Arthur Morgan and Niko Bellic" — placing Lucia alongside the two most beloved protagonists in Rockstar's history, from Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA IV. D'Agostino made the comments in an official interview with French fashion magazine LOVE, whose issue 27 released Monday with an exclusive GTA VI cover story featuring interviews with multiple developers.

D'Agostino said she based Lucia on the women she knows — especially her own mother, an immigrant who grew up in Newark, New Jersey, close to Liberty City, Lucia's hometown. She described her mother as "rowdy, kind, but not to take any sh*t," and said she related to Lucia so much that writing her "came very naturally." The goal was a "fully realised person" — "perfectly imperfect, with clichés, but also undeniably real" — which, she said, is what produces a woman who can stand next to Rockstar's greats.

Also in the LOVE feature, Rockstar's Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern revealed that the actress portraying Lucia "brought a lot to the character" — though Rockstar won't confirm her identity — and that Lucia needed to be "tough, badass, cool" to earn the lead role. Rockstar said it wants both Jason and Lucia to feel "vulnerable, tough, flawed, right sometimes, wrong sometimes, able to learn from each other" — a deliberate echo of the messy, human writing that made Arthur Morgan a fan favorite.

The interview also confirms Raul as the older mentor character: he embodies Vice City and carries the local and criminal knowledge that Jason and Lucia lack when they arrive. The LOVE feature included brand-new GTA 6 screenshots of Jason and Lucia, including the new artwork above.
