What this means

  • GTA 6 is already the biggest pre-order story in recent gaming history — before a single review is out.
  • The PS5's 74% share means Vice City will be a PlayStation-dominant playground at launch.
  • A $2B pre-release haul would make November 19 the largest entertainment launch ever, period.

Key facts

  • Date: October 20, 2026 — Sensor Tower estimates, reported by GamesIndustry.biz and GameSpot
  • So far: 6.45 million US digital pre-orders / $630M+ revenue
  • Benchmark: 148% ahead of Modern Warfare 2 over a comparable pre-release window
  • Platform split: 74% PS5 vs 26% Xbox — estimates only, digital US, not company figures

New data suggests GTA 6 is headed for one of the biggest launches in entertainment history. Sensor Tower's US digital pre-order tracker puts the game at more than 6.45 million copies sold so far, generating over $630 million in revenue — nearly a month before it releases.

The analysis firm compared GTA 6 against the biggest game launches of the past six years, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy and Marvel's Spider-Man. MW2 was the strongest of that group in digital pre-orders, and GTA 6 is pacing 148% ahead of it over a comparable period before release, as first reported by GamesIndustry.biz.

The platform split heavily favors Sony: 74% of pre-orders are on PS5 versus 26% on Xbox Series X|S — unsurprising given the PS5's larger install base. Microsoft, for its part, says it is "very happy" with the GTA 6 pre-order numbers.

These are analyst estimates covering US digital sales only. Physical copies and international markets are not included, so the true global figure is already higher. Sensor Tower expects the bulk of pre-orders to land in the final week before launch, and projects total pre-purchases could reach 25 million — which would work out to more than $2 billion in revenue before the game even releases on November 19.
