Buying for a child or choosing a gift? Start with the rating for the correct game and region. A familiar series name, an old trailer or a GTA V review cannot replace the GTA VI classification. The evidence below identifies where verification is complete and where it remains limited.

What Is the GTA 6 Age Rating?

The US ESRB record for Grand Theft Auto VI shows Mature 17+. This is a GTA VI listing naming Rockstar Games and the announced console platforms, rather than a rating borrowed from another GTA title.

The age classification is a starting point for suitability. Read the content descriptors alongside it, then use account settings to apply your household’s decision. A rating label alone does not configure a console or prevent a child using an unrestricted adult account.

ESRB M Mature 17+, PEGI 18 and USK 18 belong to different systems. Do not treat their numbers as interchangeable rules for every country, or assume a label from one market verifies a release in another.

GTA 6 Age Rating by Country and Region

The records checked support a verified US rating and a German PS5 classification. The Australian record needs a scope qualification, while a direct PEGI database record was not verified in this review.

The Australian entry carries advice about high-impact violence, sexual scenes and drug use. Its demonstration category means this article does not present that entry as a separately verified final retail-game certificate. A matching title on an official website still needs its category checked.

The German record uses keine Jugendfreigabe, meaning no youth approval. Claims that Germany is still simply “rating pending” should be checked against this current record. Conversely, “not verified here” does not mean a board has not issued a rating; it describes this guide’s evidence limit.

What Does the GTA 6 Rating Mean for Parents?

The descriptors identify the kinds of material parents should consider. They are content warnings, not a complete scene list or a measure of how often every element appears.

Violence and blood

The ESRB lists Blood and Gore and Intense Violence. Parents should assess violent content as a central suitability issue, rather than judging only from a short promotional clip. This guide does not invent specific scenes beyond the published descriptors.

Nudity and sexual content

Nudity and Strong Sexual Content are listed. These are distinct from violence and should be considered separately when choosing a game for someone else. Restricting purchases or online communication does not remove the game’s sexual material.

Strong language and mature humor

Strong Language and Mature Humor flag adult wording and themes. A low-volume setting or shorter play session does not change the age classification. Consider the full range of content rather than deciding solely from whether a child has heard similar language elsewhere.

Drugs and alcohol

Use of Drugs and Alcohol is another descriptor. It signals substance-related content without establishing a detailed frequency or mission-by-mission account. Avoid importing examples from GTA V and presenting them as verified GTA VI scenes.

In-game purchases

In-game purchases are listed separately from the content descriptors. That notice does not, by itself, establish a particular shop, purchase price, spending requirement or multiplayer mode. Review the actual offer and the child account’s spending controls before approving a transaction.

Is GTA 6 Suitable for Children?

GTA VI is not an age-appropriate choice for a 13-year-old under its verified ESRB Mature 17+ classification. The published content warnings provide a concrete basis for choosing an alternative intended for younger players.

For gift buyers, ask the parent or guardian before purchasing. Owning a compatible PS5 or Xbox does not establish suitability, and a child’s enthusiasm for the franchise is not evidence that its content matches their age.

Parental controls help enforce access, spending and time decisions. They do not turn an adult-oriented game into a child-friendly edition. Choose both the content rule and the account settings, rather than expecting a timer to solve a content concern.

How to Restrict GTA 6 on PS5

Use the child’s family-managed account to apply age restrictions, then review exceptions and spending settings. Sony’s parental-control instructions are the reference for the steps below.

Child accounts and age restrictions

  1. Create or use a family group with the child’s own account.
  2. Open Settings → Family and Parental Controls → Family Management.
  3. Select the child and adjust the age level for games and apps.
  4. Choose restrictions appropriate for the child and review any allowed-game exceptions.

Keep adult sign-ins protected. Sony notes that account settings must apply to the signed-in child; changes made during play may require signing out and back in. Test the result on the child’s account instead of assuming a menu change worked.

Purchase approval and spending controls

Under the selected child’s parental controls, review Monthly Spending Limit. Set it according to your decision and review requests before allowing exceptions. A content restriction and a spending restriction address different problems, so check both.

Playtime settings

Sony’s playtime guidance directs parents to select the child, set the time zone and open Playtime Settings. Choose permitted hours and the end-of-session action, then save. Screen-time limits should support your content decision rather than replace it.

How to Restrict GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S

Manage the child through your Microsoft family group and Xbox content settings. Microsoft’s Xbox Family Settings app supports content, spending and screen-time management for Xbox Series X|S.

Family account settings

Add the child’s account to the family group and manage it from the parent’s account. Confirm that the child uses the matching Xbox profile on the console; restrictions attached to a different profile will not represent the setup you intended.

Age-based content restrictions

Select the child’s content settings and apply an appropriate age limit for games and apps. Review exceptions before granting access. Menu wording can vary, so follow the current app instructions and verify the result on the child’s signed-in console.

Purchase permissions and spending controls

Microsoft’s purchase-approval guide gives this console route:

  1. Sign in as the family organizer.
  2. Open Profile & system → Settings → Account → Family settings.
  3. Select Manage family members, then the child.
  4. Open Privacy & online safety → Xbox Live privacy → View details & customize → Buy & download.
  5. Enable Ask a parent.

Also review the child’s balance, funding and purchase history. Do not assume every payment route behaves identically. Use the Family Settings app to review screen-time schedules and respond to access requests.

What an Age Rating Does Not Tell You

An age rating addresses content suitability; it is not a complete description of purchases, online interaction or account protections. These require separate checks.

An in-game-purchase notice does not prove GTA VI has online multiplayer. Likewise, a regional age label does not establish a universal identity-check requirement. Our crossplay status guide keeps multiplayer questions separate from content ratings.

If you decide to buy, review the pre-order and edition guide separately. Price, bonuses and delivery format do not change the suitability decision.

How We Verify GTA 6 Age Ratings

We check the named game, publisher, platform and record category before assigning a verification label. A board entry, regional storefront label and third-party report are different evidence types.

  • Use the official classification board’s record where available.
  • Confirm the entry concerns GTA VI rather than GTA V or a similarly named product.
  • Record platform and demonstration limitations instead of hiding them.
  • Mark unavailable evidence as not verified rather than filling gaps with predictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is GTA 6’s official age rating?

The verified US GTA VI rating is ESRB Mature 17+. Ratings differ by country, and this guide identifies the source and verification status for each region listed. Do not treat the US label as a substitute for a local classification or a complete content description.

Is GTA 6 rated M for Mature 17+?

Yes. The official ESRB GTA VI record lists Mature 17+ and content descriptors covering violence, sexual material, language and substance use. Parents should read those warnings alongside the age category and apply suitable account restrictions rather than relying on the rating label alone.

Is GTA 6 rated PEGI 18?

PEGI 18 appears in reporting, but a direct current PEGI board record was not verified in this review. This guide therefore does not label it board-confirmed. Check the relevant official database and regional storefront before treating a third-party report as definitive evidence.

What is GTA 6’s age rating in Australia?

The Australian Classification entry reviewed shows R18+ with adult-content advice, but its category is Demonstration (Self Selected). This guide preserves that limitation instead of presenting the entry as a separately verified final retail-game certificate. Check the current product-specific classification when making a purchase.

Is GTA 6 suitable for a 13-year-old?

GTA VI is not an age-appropriate choice for a 13-year-old under its verified ESRB Mature 17+ classification. Parents should consider the published mature-content warnings and choose an age-suitable alternative. Spending restrictions and playtime limits do not remove the content that led to the classification.

Can parents block GTA 6 on PS5?

Parents can use a family-managed child account and age-level restrictions to limit access to games above the permitted level. Review allowed-game exceptions, protect adult sign-ins and test the child’s account. Configure spending and playtime separately, because those controls serve different purposes from content restrictions.

Can parents block GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S?

Parents can manage a child’s Xbox profile through a Microsoft family group and apply age-based content restrictions. Check that the child uses the correct account, review exceptions and confirm the restriction works. Purchase approval, account funding and screen-time settings should also be reviewed separately.

Does the GTA 6 rating mean the game has online multiplayer?

No. An age classification and an in-game-purchase notice do not establish multiplayer support. Check the game’s official feature description for player count and online modes. Any future online service would also need its own review of communication, spending and parental-control settings before allowing access.
